Ricky Rijneke
All Is Hidden
Second feature by critically acclaimed and award-winning director Ricky Rijneke.
A thriller and drama about a father and his daughter, who can’t live without each other, but ultimately can’t live together either. They face a range of conflicting emotions when an impulsive act explodes into tragedy. She chooses her own life.
Synopsis
All is hidden. Under the surface, under the skin. At a remote area, in the shadow of a dormant volcano, the girl Yuri is growing up with her father and uncle. Her overworked father Lorenzo is set guarding the border of this no man’s land. His job exposes him to the darker side of society. He finds those who desperately want help, but he is powerless. That winter, when Yuri turns fourteen, her father decides that she is old enough to carry the rifle that is passed down for generations in the family. When the snow blurs all the contours in the landscape, the family drives deep into the mountains for a hunting trip but Yuri’s ‘rite de passage’ takes a disastrous and fatal turn.
At home the rigid border guard Lorenzo enforces extreme measures to keep his daughter safe, but the very “walls” he builds, eventually becomes the barrier that separates them.
A film about boundaries; between predator and prey, reality and fantasy, guilt and innocence. The film centers around moral gray areas, the blurred line between right and wrong. Tensions and emotions are hidden, they simmer beneath the surface until they eventually erupt. Just like the volcano in the movie.
